Off-highway vehicle recreation is just one of the many used allowed on the National Forest. Hondo Canyon is located in the Eastern portion of the Santa Monica Mountains inside Topanga State Park. The Corral Canyon OHV area is not an OHV 'park'. Now that the Backbone Trail is open, only small park sites at Arroyo Sequit, Peter Strauss Ranch, and Rocky Oaks remain closed. The trails vary in elevation from 3,400 feet at Corral Canyon Campground to 4,169 feet at Bronco Peak and vary in degree of difficulty from novice to advanced. The Backbone Trail continues in both directions. This segment can be accessed from the trailhead on Latigo Canyon Road, approximately 7.2 miles north of the PCH. It burned 88 percent of the land there, including 112 miles of trails and more than 30 structures. West from the trailhead, the trail dives through upper Newton Canyon, crossing the land bridge over Kanan Dume Road, Tunnel 1, to get to the Kanan Backbone Trail Trailhead. That section of the trail runs from the Kanan Road to Corral Canyon Road and was hit particularly hard by the November blaze, which was the largest fire to ever hit the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
